Our Guides

Adrian Fogg

Adrian (AD) is the founder of New Zealand Adventure Guides. Adrian grew up in the Central North Island of New Zealand, where he began guiding river trips in 1986 while still in high school. Becoming a river guide was a natural progression for a kid who spent most of his spare time training for national and international competitions in whitewater slalom and downriver racing. Adrian’s career guiding rafts and safety kayaking has taken him all around New Zealand, as well as to the US, Nepal, Canada, Chile and Ecuador, on trips ranging from the most challenging Class V rivers to remote expedition-style trips. In addition to river guiding, he has worked as a heli-ski guide, a hiking guide, a glacier guide and a ski patroller.

Around 2005 Adrian moved into more senior management and training roles including training and certifying New Zealand river guides, managing guiding operations, and writing safety manuals for various adventure operators. Prior to expanding into multi-sport adventure travel in 2012, he owned and operated a heli-rafting company that specialized in taking guests into New Zealand’s most remote and wild rivers.

Adrian has lived and worked in and many places around the world, but these days he considers two lake/mountain towns home:  Queenstown, New Zealand and Truckee, California. He has an MBA in sustainable business, and in his spare time he and his wife Emily torment their two young sons with endless outdoor adventures. He can also be found mountain biking and kite boarding.

Bard Crawford

With over 400 multi day trips guiding in the Hollyford Valley, Bard has become an expert on Fiordland National Park. He is highly respected for his extensive knowledge of the ecology, culture and history of the area and does all he can to share that depth of understanding with guests.

Bard brings a strong knowledge of Maori culture to our trips. He acts as a mentor to Rangatahi (young Maori), taking them out into the wilderness for some “bush time”.

Bard has been a Lead Guide on the tours we operated for National Geographic and MT Sobek. He is incredibly personable so receives rave reviews from guests.

Though Fiordland is now home for Bard he has been fortunate to explore most of New Zealand and would call the Top of the South Island his second home. Bard lives in Te Anau, the gateway to Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound.

Stan van Uden

Stan comes from a diverse background, born in New Zealand and growing up on the outskirts of Auckland city within a European family recently emigrated from the Netherlands. He developed a love of the outdoors from a very young age and soon became an avid recreational hiker, New Zealand providing an abundance of places to explore, particularly in the South Island where he feels most at home. He has travelled and lived in many parts of the world, but his passion for his native land always calls him back.

He has an extensive background guiding professionally throughout the wild lands of Aotearoa – New Zealand, an undergraduate degree in Environmental Science and Conservation Biology, a masters degree in Forest Ecology, and an exuberant appetite for fun. He has been a kayak guide within the pristine wetlands of the Okarito River delta, a biology and ecology tutor, and a bushcraft instructor with the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council. He has also worked on a number of conservation projects for the New Zealand Department of Conservation, and as a Lead Guide on the tours we operated for National Geographic and MT Sobek.

Marios Galvalas

Although not the most Kiwi of names, since emigrating to New Zealand from England over 20 years ago, Marios has not stopped exploring. With boots laced up, notebook, pencil and camera in his backpack, he has authored 18 guide books and ventured up many nooks and crannies of these folded lands. Being a walking guide in Fiordland, Abel Tasman and all over the mountain regions of New Zealand, he has helped make many traveller’s experiences in Aotearoa/New Zealand all the richer, including on the tours we operated for National Geographic, where he was a Lead Guide.

Marios lives with his two teenage daughters growing nutritious food on two acres of land in the Motueka Valley at the top of the South Island. When not guiding, he is often found in his garden, or spending time in the outdoors with his family, whether on foot, by mountain bike or in a canoe.

Christine Cameron

Raised in the Thames Valley of the North Island, Chris is a fourth generation New Zealander. Her childhood involvement on the family farm ignited an enduring connection with nature and the outdoors. Chris graduated with a degree in Physical Education and later also studied Spanish. Her interest in the Spanish language and passion for travel has taken her many times to South America.

Chris’s two daughters were raised in the rural area of Geraldine in the South Island, where Chris also taught at the local High School. Interest in native plant revegetation was firmly established when she developed her own patch of “bush” by ecosourcing seeds and propagating her own plants.

Chris enjoys all types of Outdoor pursuits and has hiked, climbed, kayaked, cycled, sailed and skied into many of the remote corners of New Zealand. A natural extension of these interests has been her involvement in competitive Multi Sport and Adventure Racing, and also in Search and Rescue and Ski Patrol. Chris has been a professional guide on hiking, cycling and sea kayaking trips for six years. She derives so much pleasure in sharing and exploring her spectacular country that she undoubtedly enjoys her trips every bit as much as her guests.

Steffan Rolfe

Steffan grew up in the South Island of New Zealand, an adventurers’ playgound. As his passion for the outdoors increased Steffan realized it was time to ditch his full time job to become an outdoor guide. The first step of this transition involved studying a certificate in outdoor education. Since then he has been a hiking guide around Queenstown, as well as on remote 3 day hut to hut “tramps” in the Hollyford Valley in Fiordland. In the winter he trades his hiking boots for snow shoes and leads backcountry snow shoe tours. He has also tried his hand as a skipper/guide on the Tasman Glacier Lake in Mt Cook National Park, as a 4WD Driver/Guide, and as a Ski Bus driver. In recent years he has focused on guiding multi-day adventure tours around New Zealand.

Steffan lives in Queenstown and when not guiding still loves exploring the forests and mountains that surround his home town.
